Economy and Industry : West Bengal
The services sector is the largest contributor to the GDP, contributing
51% of the state domestic product. Agriculture is the second major
player in the economy of West Bengal, contributing 27% to the state’s domestic product and the contribution from industry sector comes the remaining 22%.
Industrial
growth in the state has picked up pace in the recent times. Major
industries are located in the Kolkata region and in the mineral-rich
western highlands. Major steel plants are found in the colliery belt of Durgapur–Asansol.
Important industries include engineering products, electronics, electrical equipment, cables, steel, leather, textiles, jewellery, frigates, automobiles, railway coaches, and wagons.
